The Fernie Transfer Station has been evacuated after someone left dynamite at the facility this morning.

“Fernie Transfer Station staff discovered what appears to be six sticks of dynamite with a detonation device on the floor of the transfer station at around 11a.m,” said RDEK Communications Officer Loree Duczek. “We immediately evacuated the premises as a safety precaution and the RCMP are now on site.”

The Transfer Station will remain closed until further notice. “Our main priority is to ensure the staff, public and our emergency responders are safe,” added Duczek.

She said nobody is sure at the moment how the dynamite came to be there, and why someone left it.
