Fernie turns out for advanced voting

1,125 people have voted in Fernie already ahead of the October 15 election

Advance voting has now closed ahead of general voting day in Fernie for the October municipal elections.

According to the city’s Chief Election Officer, 1,125 people voted early in Fernie across the two advance voting days.

With an estimated 4,552 eligible voters living in the community in 2022, that means that 24.7 percent of the community has already voted.

In 2018, overall turnout was 64.2 percent – scores higher than the provincial average of 35.6 percent in that election. However in 2018, the voter base was significantly smaller at 3,925. Between then and now, the City of Fernie annexed West Fernie, and the area has witnessed significant population growth according to the 2021 census data released by Stats Canada.

Besides general voting day on October 15, admitted patients and those living in care facilities have opportunities to vote today and Friday.
