Fernie Secondary School’s senior girls volleyball team (Fernie Falcons) is fundraising for the second half of their season.

A 50/50 raffle launched on Monday (Oct. 3) to cover entry fees and travel for tournaments coming up in mid-October and mid-November, according to head coach Andrea Reed.

The first tournament is coming up on Oct. 15 and 16 in Kelowna, called ‘Best of the West’, and the second will be their zone playoffs in Grand Forks on Nov. 18 and 19.

“Because of where we are located in our little rural community, it is quite a bit of travel for us to compete at a higher level,” Reed said.

Raffle tickets are going for $5 and the goal is to sell 2,000. If they sell all the tickets, the winner is poised to win $5,000, with the other $5,000 going towards the team’s season. The draw date is Oct. 29.

Reed said the money will help to keep the fees down for parents.

“For us to attend these events we need to fundraise or it becomes an out of pocket expense for athletes and their families.”

The season runs from September to the beginning of December, and the Falcons have already fundraised for and played in a few tournaments.

“They’ve been doing fantastic,” Reed said.

The girls have had two second place finishes, and one ninth place finish (in a tournament of 27 teams).

Their overall record so far is 15 wins and four losses.

“I’m very fortunate this season to have a group of 13 girls who are all highly skilled,” Reed said.

“They work well together… it’s been very successful.”

Depending on how they do at the Grand Forks zone playoffs, they may also attend a provincial championship, which may require more fundraising.
