Fernie Subway broken into, cash register and safe stolen

The RCMP is seeking the public’s help in their investigation

Fernie’s Subway was broken into on Sunday (Nov. 6) evening and the cash register and safe were stolen, according to the Elk Valley RCMP.

An RCMP press release says that on Nov. 7, at around 6:20 a.m., police attended to a report of a break and enter at the Fernie Subway at 441 Crowsnest Highway.

“The complainant reports coming to the business in the morning to open and finding the front door smashed in and some items missing, including the business safe,” the release says, adding that officers arrived on scene and cleared the business.

“It appears that, after entry was gained, the unknown suspects headed directly to the (cash) register and safe and removed (them).”

Upon review of the securty camera footage, it was learned that the suspects entered the business at 9:35 p.m. on Nov. 6, the previous evening, and went directly for the cash register and safe.

As of Monday afternoon, no additional witnesses or suspects were known to police.

“It is highly probable given the time the break and enter occurred that there are witnesses who saw something suspicious at that location, the SW corner of Fifth Street and Highway 3 at Canada’s Best Value Inn and Suites.”

“Elk Valley Regional RCMP seeks the public’s assistance in seeing if anyone saw anything suspicious around the Fernie Subway on the night of November 6th between the hours of 9 PM and 10 PM.”

“If you have any information related to this event, please contact the Elk Valley RCMP at 250-425-6233 to speak with an officer or, if you wish to remain anonymous, contact BC Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477) to report your information anonymously. Please refer to file 2022-3467.”

The RCMP have released a photo of a white cross-over/SUV that is suspected to have been involved in the robbery. Visit The Free Press website for more details.

The investigation is ongoing.
