A flood warning has been issued for the Elk Valley, after heavy rain had the B.C. Rivers Forecast Centre concerned about flooding.
Although already on a flood watch, the valley’s potential for flooding was upgraded to 'significant’ yesterday morning due to significant rises in river levels, then upgraded further to a flood warning yesterday evening after 35 mm of rain fell today, with another 25 mm expected last night.
The advisory released by the centre last night read, “Significant rainfall has already occurred in the East Kootenay over the past six to eight hours, with significant and rapid river level rises expected overnight and into the early morning.
“Flood conditions are expected throughout tributary rivers in the East Kootenay, including the Elk River at Fernie.”
Although more rain is expected today, Environment Canada is forecasting a drying trend towards the end of this week.
