At approximately 5 p.m. on Friday, Fernie Search and Rescue (FSAR) were called to an incident at Tunnel Creek Cabin near the Lizard Range.

A 52-year-old male hiker was found in cardiac arrest at the scene. The incident occured around 3:30 p.m. According to FSAR Manager, Simon Piney, the group was out of cell phone range and had to send a hiker to the highway to call for help.

FSAR worked with the BC Ambulance Service to locate the hikers above the snowline.

“The man was transported to Fernie after being carried down to a waiting helicopter, and was sadly pronounced dead on arrival in Fernie,” said Piney. “Fernie SAR’s thoughts are with the family.”

The man was originally from New Zealand. Authorities have not yet released his name.
