An RCMP investigation is underway for a car and grass fire that took place near Elkford on Sept. 27.

According to an incident report published by the District of Elkford, the Elkford Fire Department was dispatched around 8:45 a.m. that day to a vehicle fire off the Boivin Forest Service Road.

When they arrived, the firefighters found an abandoned car that was fully engulfed in a grass fire, which was aflame in a 20 by 20-foot area and spreading. The crews doused the surrounding area to halt the advance of the grass fire, before turning their attention to the vehicle.

Enzo Calla, Elkford’s deputy fire chief, said the grass fire spread slowly due to increasingly cooler morning temperatures.

“Now if this had happened in July or August, when mornings are much warmer, the outcome would have been very different.”

Crews were on scene for about 1.5 hours dousing hotspots.

On Oct. 5 (when the report was published), the cause of the fire was unknown, and an RCMP investigation was underway.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

The incident report says that the fire department is thankful for all the citizens who saw smoke and reported the fire to 911. They also thanked the Elk Valley RCMP, Sparwood Towing and the District of Elkford’s public works staff for the assistance.

“An important reminder to residents that although autumn has arrived, temperatures are still unseasonably warm for this time of year. Please report all wildfires within the District of Elkford immediately by calling 9-1-1. Whether you’re enjoying the outdoors or spending time at home, remember to be FireSmart!”

“For more information, please contact the Elkford Fire Department at 250.865.4020 or Fire Chief Curtis Nyuli by email at cnyuli@elkford.ca.”
