Halloween auction held in Elkford to fundraise for batting cage

The event was put on by Elkford Minor Ball

A Halloween auction was held in Elkford on Saturday, Oct. 29, to raise money for a batting cage for the town.

The Halloween dance and auction night was put on by Elkford Minor Ball at the Community Conference Centre, according to Terry Vandale, administrator of Elkford Minor Ball.

“What an amazing, successful evening we had,” she said, adding that they had a great crowd of about 130 people.

“The auction was very successful with over $5,000 donated from local businesses in Elkford with a couple of items from Sparwood and the Crowsnest Pass.”

“We raised approximately $3,500 from the auction that will go directly to the batting cage.”

Vandale said the batting cage has been in the works for a few years, but progress was slowed by COVID and changes in the District of Elkford.

Not all the costs and details are known yet for the batting cage, but the estimate is that it will be around $90,000.

According to Vandale, prior to Saturday’s auction, they had raised $17,000 for the cause.

“We are meeting with the new council in early December to discuss location and size of the cage,” she said, adding that they will continue to fundraise and look for granting opportunities.

Saturday’s event featured music from Just Music out of Cranbrook, and most in attendance were dressed up in the spirit of Halloween.

“All the costumes were amazing,” Vandale said.

She thanked the District of Elkford for the use of the community centre and the Elkford Lions Club who made sure all attendees got home safe. She also thanked Ian Patterson of SMS Equipment in Elkford for a $500 donation for the batting cage.

“Many thanks to the many volunteers who helped make this night successful,” Vandale said.

“(There’s) too many to name.”
