The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory in the East and West Kootenays. The areas affected are the Elk River in Fernie, the Bull River, the Kootenay River, and small to medium sized tributary watersheds in Fernie, Cranbrook, Nelson, Golden, and surrounding areas.
A High Streamflow Advisory means stream levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but no major flooding is anticipated. Minor flooding in low-laying areas is possible. Anyone situated close to the streams affected is asked to be cautious and aware of the rising levels.
An upper low pressure system is moving across southeast B.C., bringing moderate showers throughout the region, as well as potential heavy rainfall in localized areas. Although dryer weather had led to receding levels in many rivers over the past couple days, another period of rising rivers is expected today and tomorrow. The Elk River at Fernie is currently flowing at an estimated 299 m3/s (between a two-year and a five-year flow).
