The City of Fernie has been doing some housekeeping and planning for the year to come, with meetings scheduled and councillors tagged to fill the role of Deputy Mayor through 2021 at the most recent council meeting on Dec. 14.

Councillors are nominated as Deputy Mayor to serve when the Mayor is absent or unavailable.

The six City of Fernie councillors serve as Deputy Mayor for two months at a time.

Councillors also voted on a whole rash of council committee and board appointments for the coming year, with appointments made as “a way for Council to participate on a different committee each year and offer their unique perspective to the groups.”

Mayor Qualizza was appointed the City of Fernie’s Municipal Insurance Association delegate, and to the Ktunaxa Kinbasket Treaty Advisory Committee.

Mayor Qualizza and Crs Hamilton and McIsaac were appointed to the Discretionary Grants committee, and Crs Nixon, Hamilton and McIsaac were appointed to the Parcel Tax Review Panel.

Moving on to liaison roles, Cr Prest was appointed as the City of Fernie’s liaison to the Fernie and District Arts Council and Cr McIsaac was tapped as liaison to the Fernie Chamber of Commerce.

Mayor Qualizza will be busy, being appointed as liaison to the Southern Rocky Mountain Management plan, the Fernie Seniors Society and the Northwest Regional Mine Rescue Competition Planning Committee.

Cr Nixon was appointed as liaison to the Tourism Fernie Board, while Cr Pulsifer was appointed to the Fernie Public Library Board.

All appointments made were for a one-year term beginning in January 2021.
