The Fernie Alpine Resort (FAR) is approaching its golden years, having just turned 60 years old.

“(Sixty) years ago, plastic shelled ski boots were invented, Spiderman debuted in Marvel comics, the Rolling Stones played their first live show, AND on this very day, January 10th, 1962, Fernie Snow Valley Ski Resort officially opened,” reads a Jan. 10 post on the FAR Facebook page.

Matt Mosteller, senior vice president of Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, said that it is “absolutely a huge milestone for any business.”

“It is credited to all of the staff over 60 years who have put hard work, passion, care and dedication to their mission each and every day of each year to make this possible!”

Mosteller said they are “very fortunate and grateful” for all the guests who have skied and rode with them over the last six decades, and for those who still do.

“We need to thank the community and the pioneering effort of Heiko (Socher) to give skiing wings in the early years for Fernie!”

“Lastly we have all kinds of weather, but we love most of the work of the Griz and we are grateful for many powder days so far this 21/22 winter! Happy New Year from the team at Fernie Alpine Resort.”

“Stay tuned throughout the season as we share stories and memories from our staff and long time guests, host fun and interactive contests and wrap up the season with a 60th-anniversary celebration in April,” the Facebook post reads.
