The Fernie Chamber of Commerce has had a solid slate of small businesses from around the community nominated for the 2022 Business Excellence Awards.

Across nine categories that the public and chamber members could put forward, there were almost 400 nominations for the 2022 awards.

Executive director of the chamber, Brad Parsell, said the engagement from the community was heartening.

“Every year we get a crazy outpouring of nominations, and this year was the same. Hundreds and hundreds of nominations, which is awesome – the community values its businesses.”

Businesses nominated will be returning their nomination packages in coming days, with the chamber to release the short-list of nominees in each category on October 7.

Also on October 7, tickets for the event itself will go on sale. Booked for October 21 at the Rusty Edge, the Award Ceremony will be a return to form for the chamber.

“It’s going to be awesome,” said Parsell.

“It’s a really cool event with a hundred businesses celebrating each other.”

Under the criteria for nominees, an independent board made up of people from outside the Elk Valley will select the top three nominees for nine categories, while the Fernie Chamber board of directors will decide n who gets top gong as Citizen of the Year, and the Chamber Legacy Awards.

The last category – People’s Choice – is just that, with public voting opening next week. Members of the public will be able to head to the chamber website to pick their winner for 2022.
