A lightning storm on Monday evening sparked a fire in Newgate that carried its smoke into the Elko community the next day.

According to BC Wildfire, as of Tuesday, July 21 the fire was blazing 30 kilometres west from the community of Newgate, located south from Elko. It was last estimated to be 50 hectares in size.

The fire is not posing any threats to structures or residents, but the smoke continues to create hazy skies for nearby communities.

It was last reported that five firefighters and three helicopters were tending to the flames with personnel working to establish a guard around the perimeter.
