Fernie will play host to another mini writer’s conference from March 13 to 15, with Pat and Baiba Morrow coming on board to help lead the event.

Pat Morrow, who has long been recognized as one of Canada’s premier climbers and photographers will work with conference participants on becoming comfortable with their camera. Since writing is so often accompanied by photography, this is a natural progression for the conference.

Conference organizer Keith Liggett, with the help of Baiba Morrow, will work with participants on creating the story behind the photograph. According to Liggett, “while the words carry the story, a few judicious photos can make the difference between the ordinary and the exceptional.”

Between Baiba, Pat, and Keith, they hope to be able to lead participants in an exploration of bringing both the story and the photo into focus.

The weekend will start with a social gathering at Lizard Creek Lodge on Friday evening. Full writing and photography sessions will run all day Saturday and Sunday, with youth sessions being led by Danielle Gibson running from 1-7 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

On Saturday evening, participants will gather at Lizard Creek Lodge for a presentation by Pat and Baiba on their most recent book, Searching for Tao Canyon. Tuition for the entire weekend conference is $250 and includes admission to this presentation.

This mini conference is part of a series of weekend writing conferences organized by the Fernie Writers Conference. There has already been one mini conference this year. The event took place in January and featured guest writer Jayme Moye. After this upcoming conference in March, there will be one more mini conference in May before the full, week long writer’s conference from August 17-23.
