Parkland Terrace in Fernie will soon have a new playground, with the city beginning works on the Sparling East playground on Monday (April 5).

City workers have started site preparation by clearing trees and flattening some land for the new playground.

While the site on Bossio Road is currently a whole lot of mud and slush, the city’s manager of parks, facilities and recreation, Brett Logan said the construction works should be completed before summer.

City councillors voted to award the $160,000 contract for the playground last September, with Lethbridge company BDI Playdesigns winning the tender.

BDI were noted to have met most of the criteria identified by the public through community consultation as being wanted in a new park - specifically, climbing equipment and swings.

Logan said BDI were also best fit for the playground, as their proposal was the best value, had the best timeline for completion, and had low maintenance costs.
