Corlyn Haarstad has been officially recognized as the RDEK's 2024 Electoral Area B Volunteer of the Year.

“Corlyn has made numerous contributions to the spirit, culture, and people of Area B over the years,” says Stan Doehle, who represents Area B for the RDEK. “Her great works have reached all our communities, and her compassion and dedication to serving this area is remarkable.”

Corlyn works for Cherished Memories Funeral Services and for the past 20-plus years, has dedicated her volunteer time to the non-profit, Lost Souls Society, which work to ensure that every individual who has a place in the history of the Elk Valley is properly accounted for and is never forgotten.

Her extensive research on rural cemeteries throughout the East Kootenay and time spent with family members helping them find lost, buried family has been irreplaceable. Corlyn has worked hard on building a database on each area cemetery. The effects of her research and the time she has dedicated to it will be there for generations to come, as will her efforts volunteering for the yearly candlelight vigils, held to remember those that have passed.

Outside of her commemorative efforts, Corlyn volunteers for the victim’s assistance program, and Elko Parks & Recreation. At present, she is the president of the organization. She continues to coordinate the community pancake monthly breakfasts, as well as handling the grant writing and submissions for the club and community hall.

She is also an active member of the Elko Volunteer Fire Department & the Elko Cemetery Committee.

Director Doehle formally recognized Haarstad on Nov. 18, at a celebration in her honour at the Elko Community Hall.
