On Jan. 18 at about 5:30 p.m., an eastbound semi-truck slid into the Lizard Creek Bridge on Highway 3 west of Fernie.
The highway was closed overnight and was reduced to a single-lane of alternating traffic at about at 4 a.m. today.
The driver sustained minor injuries, was treated at Elk Valley Hospital and released.
Southeast District Traffic Services Sgt. Don Erichsen said the collision damaged the Lizard Creek Bridge, which was assessed by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure before the highway was reopened this afternoon.
Erichsen said the semi lost control and jackknifed causing the cab of the vehicle to detach from the trailer.
“The truck struck both of the bridges’ guardrails, essentially destroying them,” he said.
The matter is still under investigation.
