District of Sparwood councillors have awarded a contract for the roofs of both the municipal main office and the daycare building at 156 Spruce Ave.

According to a report from staff, the roofs had deteriorated to such a state that replacing them could no longer be delayed.

The district had originally budgeted $231,000 for the project in the 2022 capital plan, but the only bid on the project was significantly over budget at $260,500 plus other expenses coming in at additional tens of thousands of dollars.

“Considering many factors, staff recommended the bid be approved without delay and the capital budget for the roof replacement projects be amended and increased to $100,000 to adjust for the bid price provided,” reads the staff report.

Factors behind the decision were the quality of the contractor (Western Roofing Master Roofers), estimates that construction costs for some materials were rising quickly, and the condition of the roofs themselves.

Staff has discouraged any delays due to the rising cost of materials and the possibility the project wouldn’t be able to be completed in 2022 if they waited any longer.

The district council therefore approved awarding the contract for $331,000 at the Sept 6 meeting, with plans for the project to be carried out this year.
