Sparwood has a new fire chief, with deputy chief Kris Hill stepping into the role.

Hill has been serving as deputy chief for the last year, and replaces outgoing chief Dean Spry.

“I am honored to accept this important role,” said Hill.

“Becoming a part of the community over the last year has really felt like I have found home in an amazing community. I was welcomed to this town from day one and feel like this is where I belong,” he said.

“It really is a dream come true to wake up, put on the uniform and the Sparwood patch/badge and serve this community every single day. As for the future of the Fire Department, I see this dedicated team to continue with community events to support residents as well as focus on education and prevention measures to ensure public safety remains our top priority.”

Hill’s appointment is effective from August 1. Outgoing fire chief, Dean Spry is retiring after over five years as chief, and another three as deputy fire chief with Sparwood before that. He came to the Elk Valley with experience serving as a firefighter in Campbell River, Kitimat and further afield in Ontario in 2014.

The district has immediately begun a search for a new deputy chief.
