Sparwood photographer, Sherry Benko has a photo in the running for the BC SPCA’s Wildlife-in-Focus photo contest.

Her image, called ‘Did you bring snacks’ is a striking capture of a red fox taken near Sparwood earlier this year.

“One evening a few weeks ago I observed three fox kits. I believe they are this year. No adults around …I immediately fell in love with them,” she said.

“They are close to home (Sparwood), she said, adding she didn’t want to be any more specific to protect them.

“When I was a girl there were no foxes around here and yet in the last few years I have seen more and more of them.”

Benko has recently retired, and has been filling her time out and about capturing images of Elk Valley wildlife every day.

“Next on the bucket list are badgers,” she said. (She later snapped a picture of one near Sparwood).

Her image of the young fox is up on the BC SPCA’s website, which you can find here. You can find Benko’s image by searching ‘Did you bring snacks’. Voting in the competition runs from July 5 to 26. Voting can be done with a minimal donation, which can be made online.

“BC SPCA is a great cause,” said Benko. Funds raised through the competition will go towards the organization’s activities in providing food and medical care to wildlife in need, while winners of the competition could have their mages featured in BC SPCA merchandise, education brochures, advocacy campaigns, Facebook posts, web pages and more.
