Sparwood to create annual local volunteer appreciation day

The day will be marked with a barbecue to show appreciation to those that give their time to the community

After a two-year hiatus, an annual volunteer appreciation event will be returning to Sparwood for 2022.

No events designed to honour the community’s many volunteers have been held since the last one in 2019 due to the pandemic, but with restrictions loosening, Sparwood can again say thanks to those that make the community a better place through their selfless contributions.

During a committee of the whole on Apr. 5, District councillors decided (after much discussion) that the second Wednesday of August would be “Sparwood Volunteer Appreciation Day” going forward, and on that day the district would host a barbecue at Centennial Square that local volunteers and members of the community could attend.

During discussion, councillors decided that a formal event was too much, and attaching anything to other events would take away from those events (and be poorly attended because the volunteers would be busy volunteering), so a casual barbecue to appreciate all volunteers was settled on.

While for August 2022 Centennial Square will be a construction site and unable to host events, there will still be a barbecue for volunteers at the Sparwood Rec Centre.

More details will come as the soon to be proclaimed Sparwood Volunteer Appreciation Day nears.
