Statement from BC Hydro - ready to respond to power outages

BC Hydro is closely monitoring its infrastructure and facilities in the East Kootenay, in particular the Elk Valley.

BC Hydro is closely monitoring its infrastructure and facilities in the East Kootenay, in particular the Elk Valley and areas around Wasa. This includes BC Hydro’s Elko Dam and Generating Station located 70 km southeast of Cranbrook on the Elk River. The river is experiencing very high flows and could rise further. The public is strongly advised to stay off the river and away from its banks. The dam does not affect downstream water levels which are higher due to heavy rainfall. BC Hydro is conducting 24-hour surveillance.

At other locations in the Elk Valley, BC Hydro crews will be on standby over the weekend to respond to power outages and disconnect power in flooded areas to protect public safety. If residents affected by flooding have had their power disconnected, for safety reasons they will need to contact their local authorities to arrange an inspection before BC Hydro can restore power.

BC Hydro is coordinating its operations with the BC Safety Authority and Emergency Management BC.
