Teck has donated $1 million to the Elkford Housing Society (EHS) for the construction of their seniors’ housing project, according to a press release.

“Teck is proud to support the Elkford Housing Society in building much needed seniors’ housing in Elkford,” said Robin Sheremeta, Teck’s senior vice president, coal.

Teck has been contributing to this project since the inception of the EHS in 2018. The mining company initially donated the land for the project, which is valued at around $400,000, the release says. The project will be the first seniors’ housing facility in Elkford, and is the founding initiative of the EHS.

The new $1 million donation from Teck “will allow the project to proceed.”

Duncan McDonald, president of the EHS, said: “Teck’s in-kind and financial support of the senior’s housing facility has provided our not-for-profit organization with an opportunity, working with additional partner funding, to move forward with our vision.

“This project would not be possible without Teck’s support and will ensure we can build a legacy project in Elkford that ensures seniors can stay in the community, near their families. This will increase the available housing in our community and will contribute to addressing the shortages and lack of dignified housing that is impacting people not just in Elkford but throughout the Valley.”
