Teck employees have raised $14,500 for schools in Elkford and Sparwood for food programs for kids in need.
According to Mike Podrasky, maintenance superintendent for Teck’s Fording River operation, the money will be split into $3,625 chunks and go to Frank J Mitchell Elementary School, Sparwood Secondary School, Rocky Mountain Elementary School and Elkford Secondary School.
Jaslene Atwal, principal of Frank J. Mitchell, said they were ‘very thankful’ for the support of the community and the Fording River employees.
“We do have a lot of students with a lot of needs, so this will really go to meeting students’ basic needs,” she said.
The fundraising effort was led by Renee Talbot, Fording River maintenance planner.
The money was raised via barbecues and fundraising draws.
“Supported by donations from Teck and local mining suppliers and vendors, Ms. Talbot organized the fundraising BBQ at FRO which raised over $7,000 from the employees, with Teck matching the donation,” reads a comment from Podrasky.
“A total of $14,500 will be split equally between four schools local to the Elk Valley, which will go to support lunch programs for kids in need.”
