The Fernie Legion now has a commemorative wall hanging to remind locals of the hardship in Ukraine.

The wall hanging, featuring a sunflower and reading ‘Peace for Ukraine’, was created by Legion member Beverley Skaalrud, who was moved to create the peice by the events in Ukraine since February 24, when Russia invaded.

“I made (it) specifically for the Legion, so that they would have something to commemorate the plight of Ukraine during this time.”

Skaalrud lost her son, Pte. Braun Woodfield, in Afghanistan, so her heart goes out to all the young soldiers in Ukraine and Russia, as both countries are losing their young men.

“It’s a sad, sad situation. It’s just tragedy, what Ukraine is going through.”

Skaalrud took it upon herself to make the creation and put it up at the Legion shortly after the start of the war.

“It’s not the Ukraine flag, but it’s the colours of Ukraine and the sunflower’s very significant for Ukraine.”

Skaalrud said the world is (mostly) standing behind the war-torn country.

“They need help, they need support, they need to be recognized,” she said.

“So, I thought I could do something to help the Legion recognize Ukraine.”
