The sixth Harvey Pass Hut is complete and open to the public after the last cabin burned in 2017.

The announcement came from Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club director, Dan Savage.

“This time we hope it’s fire proof! This is the sixth cabin at Harvey Pass and yes, the previous five were destroyed by fire.”

The last cabin went down in a 2017 forest fire that changed direction overnight and “took out the beautiful wood framed lodge that was hand built by volunteers.”

“A sad day and we have moved on in cooperation with Recreation Sites and Trails BC.”

Savage described the new cabin as a “true warming and emergency shelter.” Overnight stays are not permitted and the cabin is not rent-able.

“As with all cabins it took a huge volunteer effort and many others to make it happen. Most volunteers will be rewarded with a warm fire and comfortable setting following a big day of playing in the powder.”

The new cabin cost $30,000.

“The club paid most with some support from the CBT Communities Initiatives Program,” Savage said in an email.

The following businesses and organizations supported to building of the new Harvey Pass Hut: Recreation Sites and Trails BC; Regional District of East Kootenay Area A; City of Fernie; District of Sparwood; District of Elkford; Columbia Basin Trust; Canadian Tire Fernie; Cummings Creek Containers; Cameron Enterprises; Fernie Brewing Company; Fernie Snowmobile Association; Fernie Trails Alliance.
