An RV trailer was destroyed at the weekend near a Koocanusa campground.

The trailer was located by the old townsite of Flagstone at the end of Dorr West Road.

Wendy Huisman was staying at the nearby campground when the trailer was destroyed on Sunday afternoon and night. She said there was a large group of campers that were the culprits.

“It was a large group of campers ranging from teenagers to middle age,” she said.

“An RV trailer was left on crown land two weeks ago. A group went on Sunday afternoon and shot up the trailer first with a shotgun. Then two trucks tried to pull the RV apart.

“They then took the remainder of the trailer and hooked it up to one of the trucks and dragged it and tried to throw it into the water.

“Someone was shooting off guns all weekend. Sunday night they shot at a propane tank or gas tank and blew it up against a hillside. Everyone rushed from our campground to fight any existing fire and called the fire department. Thankfully the fire was put out before it started a forest fire. It is tinder dry out here.”

The RCMP had to attend the campground several times over the long weekend.

“The area is being destroyed and the government is hard pressed to find funds to deal with this,” said Huisman.

“We just want help in cleaning this up before the water rises and this all goes into the lake.”
