Renovations are underway for the Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club’s Tunnel Creek Hut.

According to an Aug. 15 news release, the plan is to replace the original Tunnel Creek bunk house with a permanent structure that matches the newer day use facility.

“This renovation on the hut would increase the quality of overnight stays and improve the day use experience,” the release said, adding that footing and occupancy will remain the same.

The volunteer work on the project began in 2021 with planning, approvals and fundraising, and continued this summer with the removal of the original bunk house and transportation of building materials to the site, with the help of Ascent Helicopters.

“At this time the project is far from complete however substantial progress has been made.”

The release says that luck is always a factor with cabin projects in the Alpine, and that a late spring, fire season or an early winter can influence the outcome.

“Hopefully we’ll have luck and good fortune for the Tunnel Creek bunk house project.”

In coming weeks they will be flying in the remaining materials, including a new wood stove, and finish the renovations.

“Soon after we’ll be flying in firewood for the coming ski season… the fun never ends!”

The release thanked all volunteers, organizations and businesses who supported the project and made it possible.

“Volunteers are welcome to help, there are tasks for everyone, contact the club at info@fernietrails.com.”
