Winter begins to descend on the Elk Valley

The top halves of the mountains were covered with snow and frost on Saturday

Winter has begun to descend on the Elk Valley, with snow on the mountains and chilly precipitation in much of the upcoming forecast.

Valley dwellers were graced with a front row seat to the season shift on Saturday (Oct. 22), as mountains from Fernie to Elkford had their top halves dressed with frost and snow.

Social media was awash with photos from local businesses and organizations of the seasonal spectacle, with Mugshots in Fernie posting that “She has arrived, winter is here.”

The Fernie Alpine Resort snow report, updated on Saturday around 6 p.m. and taken from the Bear Weather Plot at 1615 m, said they had received 15 cm overnight.

As for the next week, The Weather Network says that Fernie will be seeing temperatures just above 0 degrees coupled with precipitation. Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday all show various degrees of light snow, scattered flurries, showers and mixed precipitation. Thursday and Friday are predicted to be a mix of sun and clouds.

The next week in Sparwood is looking to have a bit more sun, with Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday and Monday all showing precipitation and slightly warmer temperatures than in Fernie. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are all predicted to be a mix of sun and clouds.

Elkford is looking to have more sun than the rest of the Elk Valley over the next week, with every day until Monday (Oct. 31) predicted to be a mix of sun and clouds, with temperatures hovering above 0 degrees.
