Grace Arbuckle Dvorak

On March 22, 2010, at the age of 90 years, Grace passed away at the Elk Valley Hospital in Fernie, surrounded by her family.

Grace was born in Musselshell, Montana August 15, 1919 to Tom and Agnes Arbuckle. The family, miners from Scotland “followed the mines,” eventually settling in Coal Creek in 1920 where she was raised with 5 sisters and 4 brothers. She ventured to work in Creston and Vancouver, returning to Fernie marrying Frank Dvorak in September 1939. There they raised their children (Buck, Jim and Debbie) and stayed involved with their families. Grace had a great pride in her heritage, her accomplishments and especially her family. She spoke often and lovingly of her life growing up, her unusual achievements (chief cook and bottle washer for Franks guiding outfit), community involvement (United Church, PTA, hospital auxiliary and hospital board). Grandchildren and great grandchildren were the highlight of her life. Whenever possible she attended sports, dances and school events. Crafts, games, tea parties and the old songs were a constant part of her life. She was Grandma Grace to many other local children and families.

From an early age Grace developed an interest in mining and local area history and became the local historian, always happy to share her knowledge and experience. As a prolific writer, her life, loves and cares are reflected in her poems and stories. As a strong, determined, independent woman, Grace was never afraid to voice a contrary opinion. Grace’s door was always open and the coffee pot on to welcome family, friends and strangers alike.

We love you always.

Grace is survived by her sister Cora Fowler and immediate family:

Children: Buck (Mary Ann), Jimmy (Adele), Debbie (Don); Grandchildren: Cody, Todd (Dani), Dayna, Tommy, Shannon (Mike), Troy, Jason; Great Grandchildren: Cory, Kayleigh, Tyler, Alisia, Logan, Corbin, Ryan, Korynn; Great Great Granddaughter: Audrey.

A service was held on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Cherished Memories “Serenity Chapel” with Jane Clarke officiating. Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.
