Mar 27, 2018
With the heaviest of hearts, we regretfully announce the passing of Joe Carolla, leaving us in his sleep on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. He was a wonderful, caring, compassionate friend to us all. His passing will forever leave our lives shadowed. Joe is a legend. His life led an amazing journey for 36 years, touching so many hearts through his short time. He will always be a blessing our lives were given.

Joe (Joey) was raised in both Sparwood and Fernie, a true valley boy. His love of the outdoors led him to enjoy hunting, dirt biking, camping, fishing or cruising in his side x side. His love of music was prominent, blaring from the stereo of his red Camaro, often found doing burnouts with his contagious smile and laughter emerging from the cloud of burnt rubber.

Joe, a 3rd generation coal miner, had a passion for mining and proudly carried on his family's tradition. Even a recent tribute to his forefathers marked his dedication. He was the "go-to-guy" at Fording River for over 13 years. His knowledge of mining and skill when operating his hoe were unsurpassed and did not go without recognition, achieving an Excellence in Mining award this past year. Simply put, Joe loved coal, it was in his blood.

Through his years, anyone who knew Joe also knew he was an avid hockey fan. Whether playing on a team, cheering, or coaching, Joe was often found near a rink. His love of hockey and kids led him into a coaching role, helping Sparwood youth to become better at the game. His skills were acknowledged when he achieved the Volunteer of the Year award for coaching. Aside from being a hardcore Oilers fan, he loved his Broncos, faithfully attending Football Sundays.

As a boy, Joey's bleach blond hair was always blowing in the wind while attacking the world with his large group of friends, cousins and his sister, staying out playing in the dark. His charisma and character shone brightly into his loved ones' lives. He was truly a gift to us all; an excellent soulmate, partner in crime, son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, friend and teacher.

Joe leaves behind all the loves of his life: his mother Jackie Small, his amazing sister Chelsea Small (Matt), his aunts and uncles: Janet (Tony) Zielinski, Philip (Maria) Small, David Small (Michelle Collins) and Pauline (Dwayne) Zuffa, his grandparents Roy Small and Pete and Leona Carolla, his soulmate Sheri Hartley, parents-in-law Wayne and Corinna Hartley, and brothers-in-law Randy (Cara), Ryan, Shaun (Haylee), Clayton (Arjay), and Kyle (Candace), as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, many cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his beloved grandmother, Jean Small on January 3, 2018, and his loving father, Bradley Carolla on January 21, 2018.

I know I was born,

And I know I will die,

But the in between is mine.

I am mine.
