John (Jock) Loughery passed away suddenly on September 10, 2010 at the age of 82. He left his family here to continue his labors at carpentry which he did as a trade and whenever he had a chance, in his spare time. He could be found in his workshop building or restoring furniture.

Jock was born in Trail, BC on July 28, 1928. He obtained his certificate in carpentry at Cominco where he worked until moving to Fernie in 1954. He met Mary while she was attending Trail Business College in 1951. They were married December 28, 1952 and lived in Trail until moving to Fernie in 1954.

After several visits to Fernie, Jock like the area so much that they moved where they have resided ever since, except for 6 years living in Sparwood, BC while Jock was Property Manager for Kaiser. He was also employed by Westar and Fernie School District No. 1 until his retirement in 1993.

Jock enjoyed the outdoors and spent time with his 3 sons hunting and fishing. On weekends in the summer he could be found at Loon Lake with his family or out on a hockey trip in winter. He was active in the Kinsmen Club in his younger years and recently kept busy with his friends coffeeing at Tim Hortons or A&W or playing crib at the Sr. Citizen’s Club.

Jock was predeceased by his son John Richard Loughery Jr. in August 2009, his father Richard, his mother Mary, four sisters: Margaret, Mary, Jean, and Adrienne and two brothers: Richard and Stewart as well as his brother-in-law John Bachlet and nephew Andrew. He will be deeply missed by his wife Mary of 58 years, his sons Gary (Trena deceased) and Rick (Michelle), sisters-in-law Helen Bachlet, Elizabeth (Malcolm) Tannant, and Sharyn Bachlet, his grandchildren Travis, Chad, Brandon and Brittany, one great grandchild Madison, nieces Anne Marie and Allison and nephew David. Jock is also survived by many other nieces and nephews from his six deceased siblings.

Prayer services were held at the Holy Family Catholic Church on September 14th and Funeral Mass was celebrated on September 15th with Father Bart van Roijen, Celebrant. Interment followed at St. Margaret’s Cemetery after which a lovely luncheon was served by the ladies of the Sr. Citizen’s Club where many of Jock’s friends came to pay their final respects to him.

Donations can be made to the Fernie Sr. Citizen’s Club in Jock’s name. Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.
