July 17, 2020
It is with profound sadness that the family of Ken Kaisner announces his sudden passing at the age of 84 on July 17th, 2020 at Rocky Mountain Village, Fernie, B.C. Ken was a lifelong resident of this area, born in Natal, B.C., and relocated with his family to the 'farm' in the Elk Valley on his 10th birthday. He walked to the 'Volpatti' school with neighbouring children for a year after which a bus transported them to school in Natal.
Ken's first job was cutting trees for the highways department. He also worked for Anderson Construction and after that Westar Mining for 22 years until the mine shut down. Ken joined the Sparwood Volunteer Fire Department around 1969.
In retirement he very much enjoyed his rides around the valley where he would stop at the 'big ranch' and admire and sometimes photograph the herds of elk and deer. Ken enjoyed socializing with everyone and the tourists at the 'big titan truck' explaining the truck and mine operations to them. He was recognized for his efforts as a 'titan ambassador' and proudly received plaques and certificates from the District of Sparwood Chamber of Commerce. He also enjoyed curling and watching games at the various ball fields in Sparwood and Elkford.
Ken relocated to Rocky Mountain Village in Fernie in 2015 where he received excellent care from the management and staff. He made many good friends and had his own 'family' in assisted living. Everyone looked after him and he looked after them. We called him the Rocky Mountain Village 'greeter'.
Ken was predeceased by his parents, Jerry and Anna Kaisner, sisters Myrtle (Tony) Cerny, Mildred (Martin) Osadan, Mabel (Lloyd) Hegland, step-sister Lillian (Robert) Sherwood, step-brother Frank Fisher. Ken is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Ken had an amazing memory and his recollection of the past was so interesting. He could name people and relate incidents from eons ago. He will be missed, as will his stories.
We acknowledge and thank Dr. Shelley Forrest for her continued care for Ken as well as the doctors, nurses and staff at all Elk Valley Health facilities. Also, to John and Lynda at Cherished Memories Funeral Services, thank you for your assistance.
For those who so desire donations in memory of Ken can be made to the charity of their choice.
