GUZZI:

Mary Catherine Guzzi (nee Waswick) passed away after a short stay in hospital, on August 30, 2016, 2 days after celebrating her milestone 90th birthday.

Mary (Auntie Mary, or Nan as she was known to most) was born in Kagney, France on August 28, 1926 to parents Henri and Angeligne. Her family immigrated to Canada by boat in June 1928. Mary was the youngest of 4 children, and grew up in coal creek, where her family settled when she was a toddler. Her love of family began with her mother, spending most of her time learning about how to make do during the depression days and enjoying simplicity. Her work life began at Spic and Span dry cleaners, Mitry’s grocery store, and her career that she loved was at Overwaitea, which she retired from in 1983.

A truly talented homemaker and cook, Mary’s dedication to service extended beyond her family, to her community. Lifetime memberships to both the Seniors Drop-in center and the Legion were awarded for her selfless commitment.

In her later years, Mary enjoyed darts, cards, bingo, and coffee with friends when she wasn’t spending time with her family.

Her life revolved around her family, and she was especially devoted to the youngest member, her great granddaughter.

Surviving are her children, Libby Weir, Darlene (Danny) Frost, Paul (Tracey) Guzzi, grandchildren, Gerald Weir, Michel Weir, Christopher (Melissa) Guzzi, Ryan Guzzi, and great granddaughter Giovanna Sadie Guzzi. Mary was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Henri, Stan, and Joseph.

Never one to attend a funeral, but rather grieve and pay respects in her own way, Mary has requested no funeral service. Donations in Memoriam can be made to the Fernie Senior’s Drop-in Center.
