May 19, 2020
It is with great sadness and wounded hearts that we announce the passing of Maureen (Mom) on May 19, 2020 at the age of 73.
An immediate family mass was held at Cherished Memories "Serenity Chapel" on Friday, May 22nd, with a memorial service scheduled for Wednesday, May 19, 2021.
Maureen was the third of seven siblings born to Mel and Mildred Harrington of Fernie.
Maureen will be forever missed by her loving and caring husband of 53 years, Frank; her children, Mark (Valerie) and Marnie; grandchildren Madison, Tanner and Elliott; her sister Carol (Glenn); brothers Jim (June), Pat (Myrna), Terrance (Gena) and Peter (Marion), nieces, nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Michael.
Maureen's (Mom's) passing marks the earthly end of a wonderful wife, devoted mother, special grandmother, loving sister and sister-in-law, caring aunt, and loyal friend. Family meant everything to Maureen as she treasured every family gathering. Some how, some way we go forward knowing that Maureen will continue to inspire every decision, bring her warm smile, and watch over every act and thought.
Maureen (Mom) passed away in a glorious family and spiritual surrounding, in peace, in grace and in dignity with her loved ones at her side, after being captured and held hostage by Alzheimer's and becoming a tortured prisoner for 18 years. Her slow, agonizing torture included the removal of her memory, her ability to communicate, her ability to see, her ability to eat, her ability to walk and her ability to display the love for her cherished grandchildren. Maureen accepted her reality with grace, calm and an unbelievable heart.
We are grateful to friends in the Elk Valley that helped Maureen (Mom) along the way. We are grateful for some of the amazing staff, residents and families encountered at Rocky Mountain Village during the better part of the last 12 years. We are grateful to friends of our community who provided her special care. We will be eternally grateful to Father David for his prayers, his anecdotes, and his comfort that contributed to a storybook final chapter. Our final chapter was truly blessed. Our overwhelming grief will be tempered by the privilege, support, and joyful memories of having had Mom in our lives.
On August 26, 1967 Maureen and Frank left the church that Saturday morning to walk through life together. (The lyrics to Starship's "Nothing's Going to Stop Us Now" gives a great reflection of our early steps) As our journey continues, we will still walk hand in hand.
In lieu of flowers and food expressions of thoughtfulness, Maureen's (Mom's) memory would be honoured with a random act of kindness that would brighten someone's day or a donation to the Elk Valley Hospice Society, or simply finding a couple of minutes (3 minutes and twenty-eight seconds) listening to the Righteous Brothers Unchained Melody.
