March 18, 1954 - June 6, 2020
It is with great sadness that the family of Mr. Peter Hunink announce the end of his journey on earth, after a short battle with cancer on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at the age of 66 years. Peter was born on March 18, 1954 in Brockville, Ontario. His parents emigrated from the Netherlands; and Peter was the first of his six siblings to be born in Canada. He was the middle child, with one brother and two sisters, who were older than him, and one brother and two sisters who were younger. Peter worked at various jobs in Ontario; including Black and Decker, and then attended Algonquin College to become a Chef. In the 1970's, he moved to Alberta; where he worked a few jobs including the Jasper Lodge and cooking for Railway Crews. Peter met and married Joyce in 1981, and moved to Elkford, British Columbia, to work in the coal mines. The couple had two sons who still reside in Elkford, along with their wives and children. After twenty-seven years of working in the coal mine, Peter moved back to Alberta and took a job with Buist Motors in Rimbey; a job he very much enjoyed. He began a relationship with Kathy, and they resided in Rimbey, until his retirement in 2017; at which time they moved to Red Deer, until his passing. For Peter, family was everything. He loved visiting with everyone, and his children and grandchildren meant the world to him. Peter was well known by all who knew him, for his kind and gentle nature. He loved all children, and was always teaching them songs and sayings, which they adored him for. Peter also loved to treat them with sweets, especially strawberry marshmallows. He would also give more than he had to anyone in need; he never worried about himself. He was a very humble man, and his compassion and generosity to everyone he met was a part of him that never varied. Peter will be lovingly remembered by his partner, Kathy Ashworth; his sons, Norman (Samantha) Hunink and Aaron (Ashley) Hunink; his step children, Jennifer (Carlo) Ashworth and Jamie (Twyla) Ashworth; his grandsons, Beau and Waylon and his step grandchildren, Norah, Paige, Jackson, Annabeth and Issabella. He will also be sadly missed by his brothers, Gerrit (Helga) Hunink and Randy (Caroline) Hunink; his sisters, Dorothy (Cliff) Bush, Ann (Frank) Agnew and Bernice (Mike) Demers; as well and numerous nieces and nephews. If desired, Memorial Donations in Peter's honor may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society at www.cancer.ca. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com. Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 - 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.
