Kids were encouraged to try out sports by Canadian Tire during the company’s Jumpstart Day on Saturday, May 30.

The Jumpstart program is a Canadian Tire charity that promotes funding for local youth athletic programs.

“What’s so great about Jumpstart is that 100 per cent of the money that is raised by the community, stays in the community,” said Mark’s Work Warehouse store manager Ali McTavish. “It’s actually helping kids in the Elk Valley get into sports and today is all about bringing more awareness to that,” she added.

McTavish said that funds raised from Jumpstart are put towards registration, equipment and transportation fees for any sport a child may be interested in.

“Hockey is an expensive sport because of all the equipment necessary and we’re also seeing a lot of increased in soccer because of that,” said McTavish. “But the funding can be put towards any sport, no matter what.”

The day consisted of a barbecue led by Canadian Tire employee volunteers as well as an activity area for kids to engage in beanbags, basketball and other sports.

“We really wanted to get the kids involved in all aspects of Jumpstart day so we had them paint signs for Jumpstart Day and really be involved in the process,” said Canadian Tire employee Brad Ferrier who led kids that dropped by in a few games in the activity area.
