Fresh from the Canada Winter Games, Sam Goodison placed first in men’s dual moguls on the final day of the 2019 Mogul Canadian Series, hosted by Fernie Freestyle Ski Club at Fernie Alpine Resort Sunday.

Representing the Alberta mogul team, he also won bronze in the men’s moguls on Saturday.

Goodison was one of four Fernie athletes competing at the Freestyle Canada-sanctioned event, with Kale Wenzlawe, Daniel Hammer and Andrew Nixon also making the cut.

Fernie Freestyle Ski Club president Troy Nixon said this is the highest number of club athletes to compete in a Canada Cup event.

They were up against the top skiers from across Canada, with 77 athletes travelling from as far as Quebec.

“I think our younger boys did quite well for this national level of competition,” he said.

“We had some bad luck with skis popping off and some crashes, but nobody was injured and truly that is what makes me happy.

“As for our local boy Sam Goodison who competes with the Alberta Mogul Team, congrats. A bronze on day one and a gold in duals is fantastic.”

Competitors enjoyed fine conditions over the weekend and were cheered on by dozens of spectators, who gathered at the bottom of Bear Run.

Nixon said the event was an eye opener for local skiers.

“We have 103 athletes in Fernie Freestyle and all of them watched either Saturday or Sunday,” he said. “It is quite inspiring to watch this level of athleticism.”

The competition was part of the Canada Cup Series and the biggest Fernie Freestyle has hosted since 2004.

Nixon said bringing the event to Fernie was a team effort.

“It was a lot of effort from a lot of people, locals and people from afar, making this happen,” he said.

“We hope to make this Canada Cup an annual event and perhaps host a Nor-Am and eventually a World Cup.”

Next up for local athletes are spring break camps and a final intra-club event during the last weekend of the season.

Fernie Freestyle will also compete at the Alberta Championships in Calgary from March 29-31.
