Local skiers have dominated the podium at an interprovincial freestyle competition held in Fernie earlier this month.

A total of 127 athletes took part in the Alberta Club Championship #1 from January 18-20, which featured moguls and slopestyle, and was hosted by Fernie Freestyle Ski Club at Fernie Alpine Resort (FAR).

They enjoyed a variety of conditions over the course of the competition.

“Friday was a training day and clear, Saturday it snowed and was incredibly fun, and Sunday was beautiful and clear,” said Fernie Freestyle Ski Club president Troy Nixon.

Fernie skiers went up against others from Calgary, Edmonton, southern Alberta and Pincher Creek, placing in every category except U20 boys in the moguls event.

In the U10 boys, it was a triple Fernie podium with Jack Nash taking first, Jack Hawrys second and Tain Prentice third.

For Nixon, the highlight of the competition was watching the youngest skiers, the U8s, hit the moguls and rails.

He said the season so far has been “fantastic” with the support of FAR.

The club is currently looking for volunteers to help run the Canada Cup Mogul and Dual Mogul event on March 8-10.
