A little piece of Fernie will be at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

The opening ceremony on Friday, February 7 marked the official start of the Games and present the athletes to the world.

Canadian Tire is rooting for Canada’s Olympic athletes by sending their best wishes to Sochi on a “We All Play for Canada” flag, stitched together from over 490 pieces of fabric  with signatures and personal messages from staff at stores across Canada, including Fernie.

Dirk Naude of Fernie was chosen to sign the flag. Naude has been working at the Fernie Canadian Tire since the beginning in 2006.

“Dirk gives 110 per cent everyday,” said Angus McDonald, associate dealer. “He has an incredible sense of commitment to his job so it was very fitting for him to sign the flag as it also takes a certain type of commitment for the athletes to get to the Olympics. Not once has Dirk been late for work and I don’t think he has missed a single day (on his schedule).”

The flag will be displayed on the Canada Olympic House in Sochi meaning a little piece of Fernie will be in Sochi encouraging our Canadian Olympians to go for the Gold.

Canadian Tire’s sports marketing brand campaign, “We All Play for Canada” takes aim at rallying Canadians to get kids active.

“As Canadians, we are all united by play,” said  Candice Bruton, Canadian Tire. “It makes us stronger, happier, more creative and more tenacious as individuals, as communities and as a country. Whether it’s playing road hockey in the street, cheering on our Olympians or taking our kids to the park, we all play for something bigger than ourselves.”

The Olympic Winter Games will run for two weeks in Sochi, Russia, ending with the closing ceremony on Feb. 23. A medal information board will be at the entrance of the Fernie Canadian Tire.
