The Sparwood Skatepark is on track to be completed by the end of August.

The new skate park, located beside the Sparwood Aquatic Centre, has been under construction since late May.

Once completed, the Sparwood Skate Park will measure just under 10,000 square feet. It is almost 190 feet long and 60 feet at its widest point.

The park will contain 18 independent features including a large bowl with pool coping in the deep end.

There will also be several step ups, handrails and ledges.

Nicole Latka with the Sparwood Skate Park society is excited that the end is in sight.

She believes the skate park will bring more people out into the community.

“It will be appealing to all ages and a great opportunity for social interaction,” she said in an email.

“The great thing about the skate park is it will provide physical activity in a safe and challenging place for skaters of all levels to develop as athletes.”

Back in November, Latka said there were a large number of young people in the community, with more than 600 students enrolled at the primary and high schools in Sparwood.

Since fundraising for the project began in 2014, the society has been blown away by the generosity of local businesses.
