The Chinook track and field club from Lethbridge hosted a “throwers only” competition over the May long weekend. It brought together many of the top throwers in Canada right from Nova Scotia all the way to B.C.

Cera Atherton from Passtrak took advantage of the opportunity to rub elbows with some of the nation’s top athletes.

Cera was by far the youngest athlete at the meet with only one other girl in her age group. She tested her current ability in three of the four events, shotput, discus and javelin, opting to pass on the hammer throw.

On Friday night her first event was the shotput where she placed first in her age group with a 9.38 m toss just 4 cm short of her personal best.

The second event was the discus where she improved by a whopping 4.5 m out to 28.51 m for first place in her age group. The third event on Friday was the javelin where she threw another lifetime best of 23.54 m for first place in her age group.

On Saturday Cera had a second try at the same three events and placed first in her age group in all three once again.

Her discus result of 26.64 m was a little shorter than Friday but still beyond her previous lifetime best. Javelin was the same situation. She threw 23 m which was again a little less than Friday but still past her previous best. Her shotput fell off a little bit down to 8.53 m but that is the event where she has had the least amount of training so far this season.

Passtrak’s next competition will take them to Calgary on June 11 and 12.
