Elkview slide

Workers at Elkview had to be evacuated from an area of the open pit mine after a retaining wall collapsed.

Workers at Elkview had to be evacuated from an area of the open pit mine after a retaining wall collapsed.

Mine employees noticed the wall start to slide on Tuesday at about 6 a.m, and evacuated the area soon after.

Nic Milligan, spokesman for Teck Resources, told The Free Press on Tuesday night that there were no injuries and no impact to production at the mine near Sparwood.

“A small wall slid at Elkview. This does happen from time to time.

“There was more minor raveling throughout the day. There are no more materials falling, but it is being monitored,” he said.

“All employees have been removed from the area. We are very happy there were no injuries.”
