Mayor David Wilks

Project season is in full swing within the District of Sparwood. Residents will see many things happening in and around the community throughout the remainder of the year as projects start and complete within 2024. Council is particularly proud to see the continuous progression and advancement of the District as we aim to provide the best quality of life and services to residents.

Some of the most notable projects that will be underway this year include:

Titan Repainting

This project is currently under way and will see the Titan being sandblasted, primed and repainted to keep the truck looking it’s best for many years to come. There will be impacts to Titan Park and viewing of the Titan until this project is completed later this summer.

Centennial Street East Sidewalk & Plaza Parking

The east sidewalk of Centennial Street has undergone paving stone replacement to match the work done in the Plaza. Rocks will be adjusted and bollards added to the parking stalls to rectify parking issues within the Plaza.

Lions Park Water Looping

The Lions Park Water Line Looping will be a significant project. The main objective of this project involves enhancing the Districts water system by completing a key connection to our infrastructure located from the 4-way intersection on Pine Avenue extending on Red Cedar Crescent along Lions Park to Engelmann Spruce Drive. In addition to the water line looping there is storm water pooling at the Recreation and Leisure Centre South parking lot entrance which will also be addressed, streetlights will be relocated to the west side of the parking lot and the Lions Park post and chain fence will be replaced separating the parking area from the park. The paved pathway within Lions Park, which is also the path of the Lions Park Skating Loop will be illuminated as part of the project. Water will be maintained to residential properties throughout the project through above ground lines, however there will be traffic detours and closures to Lions Park and surrounding areas during the course of the work which is anticipated to be completed at the end of 2024. Construction will begin after Coal Miner Days to reduce any impacts to the event.

2024 Paving Program

The District of Sparwood has a significant pavement rehabilitation plan for the summer of 2024. The overall project includes over 2 kilometers length milling and inlay pavement improvements including optional scope for curb and sidewalk replacements and widening at select locations.

Shade Sails

Shade sails will be added to the Spray Park and Skate Park areas to provide shade. Minor closures will occur during the construction phase where posts are drilled, set and poured with concrete, which may temporarily impact user group access.

Wastewater Treatment Plant

This upgrade is necessary to replace the existing oxidation ditch and capacity upgrades. We will be moving into Sequencing Batch Reactors which is a sludge activated system designed for wastewater treatment.

The District received over $8,400,000 in grant funding for this project which is currently in the detailed design stage and working towards approval from the Ministry of Environment.

FireSmart

The District was approved for $146,000 for the 2024 FireSmart Community Funding & Support funding grant. Recruitment will start shortly for a 1-year contract position for a Fire Smart Coordinator to undertake this important work.

These projects are some of many which will be occurring throughout the year. We understand that with projects and construction there also comes some inconveniences such as detours or use impacts. We appreciate your patience while this work is done.
