Sparwood residents had the opportunity to swim with council and the mayor last night at the Sparwood Leisure Centre as part of Move For Your Health Day.

The health initiative is an international event created by the World Health Organization to promote physical activity and is supported by the BC Recreation and Parks Association as well as ParticipACTION.

Approximately one hundred locals took advantage of the Sparwood Leisure Centre’s free admission rate.

“We had a very good turn out for Move For Your Health,” said community services assistant at the Leisure Centre Sheri Taylor. “It’s important to have initiatives like this in Sparwood to engage residents into becoming more active and fit with free activities.”

Present in the pool were council members Jenna Jensen, Brad Bowen, Lois Halko, Margaret McKie and Joe Jarina as well as Sparwood Mayor Cal McDougall.

In addition to balls being added to the pool for extra fun during swim time, seven teenaged candidates took part in a National Lifeguard Service training course on the pool’s deck.

“The lifeguard candidates participated in various simulations that cover various problems that occur in a pool. From public relations to first aid problems,” said Shelly Hume, aquatic supervisor. “They’re a great group of kids aged 16-17,” Hume added.
