A Fernie-based photographer has taken a break from shooting weddings and family portraits to use her talents for a great cause.

Sarah Spring has joined up with the Tiny Light foundation to do photo shoots of families with a child who is facing a serious illness or life changing diagnosis.

“The founder of the Tiny Light Foundation was looking for someone in the area and found me, and really loved my work,” said Sarah Spring.

The Tiny Light Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides professional photography for children and families that have been faced with a life altering diagnosis.

It was started by Melissa DePape after her daughter, Nevaeh, was diagnosed with a heart defect before birth.

“I look back at my photos and realize all the small moments that I had forgotten, how little she was, how pale, and skinny she once was.

“I look back and see how far she has come and how strong she has grown,” said DePape on the Tiny Light website.

“I want other families to have these moments to share. Because no matter how big or little, how strong or weak, how sick or healthy, every moment should be remembered.”

Spring just finished her first photo session for the Tiny Light Foundation.

“The experience was indescribable, I can’t put it into words,” she said about working with her first family.

Spring doesn’t have children herself but was really able to connect with the family through her photos.

“I took them to the zoo in Calgary and was able to be there with Elizabeth and her sister, and be there in the moment with them,” said Spring.

Elizabeth is six and was diagnosed with a life threatening illness after she was born.

“She has seizures, and they don’t know how long she will live,” said Spring.

She said that it is a great experience to give back to people through what she loves to do.
