The Elk Valley branch of Wildsight is preparing for their annual Earth Day celebrations on Apr. 22.

The Elk Valley branch of Wildsight is preparing for their annual Earth Day celebrations on Apr. 22.

The afternoon event is family-friendly and will be hosted at the Fernie Heritage Library from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature a variety of activities, including a speaker series, a seed swap and nature tours, among other things.

Sandra Boer, office and program coordinator for Wildsight, hopes the event will be a positive gathering to celebrate Earth Day.

“Every year, I think we come up with a new theme,” she said. It is a lot of work to pull it all together.  It’s fun bringing people together and creating this event for the community.”

The WildSafe BC Community Coordinator will have a booth featuring information on bear and wildlife in the Elk Valley and BC Hydro will donate trees for people to take home and plant in their own yards. There will also be face painting and games for children.

“The focus of this year is soil, food sustainability,” said Boer. “There are lots of different things that come together and it’s a positive community engagement event.”

There are events throughout the week to complement Earth Day, including a Wild Ideas talk and a movie screening at the Arts Station. For more information, visit Wildsight.ca.
