Four Kootenay East communities will receive funding as part of the Province’s cash infusion to stimulate local economies and help communities across B.C. with their spending priorities. This funding represents the latest instalments of the Strategic Community Investment Fund.

The Strategic Community Investment Fund (SCIF) was established to stimulate local economies, create jobs and encourage overall growth. It distributes $30 million in Small Community and Regional District Grants and $30 million from the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing program to communities across B.C. to support investments in basic local government services.
“The Strategic Community Investment Fund is another way our government supports local government and their tax payers," said East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett.
SCIF restructures the Small Community and Regional District Grants and the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing program so that communities receive provincial funding earlier and throughout the year, rather than in one installment. This provides more financial certainty and stability for grant recipients.
The Small Community and Regional District Grants are unconditional grants to local governments that assist them in providing basic services. Grant amounts are based on a formula that factors in a base amount, population and assessment values.
The Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing program assists eligible municipalities that directly pay police enforcement costs. The grants come from ticket fines and court-imposed fines on violation tickets, and the amount of money a municipality receives is based on its contribution to municipal policing costs.
