Seniors and citizens with disabilities living in Elkford will soon have a new living option available to them, with the construction of an accessible apartment building on Alpine Way.

B.C Ministry of Housing announced April 30 that a four-storey building will be built at 214 Alpine Way with accessible and adaptable features to accommodate seniors and disabilities. The building will be adjacent to another new apartment building on 421 Boivin Rd. for middle-income couples and families, which is part of a separate project.

The Alpine Way apartment building will have 25 one-bedroom units and will be run off of solar energy. Construction is expected to be fully completed in 2025.

B.C Housing states on its website that Elkford Housing Society will operate the building, and that target occupants are low to moderate in income.

“After years of planning by the Elkford Housing Society, we’re thrilled to see this project underway. The district strongly supports purpose-built affordable rental housing, and housing for seniors in our community, and this project is a prime example of the development we’re hoping to see in our growing downtown area,” remarked Elkford mayor Steve Fairbairn in an e-mail.

Teck has provided $1 million towards the project and has donated the land for development.

Other funders include the District of Elkford with approximately $200,000, Columbia Basin Trust with approximately $670,000, Regional District of East Kootenay with approximately $500,000, the provincial government with approximately $2.8 million from the Community Housing Fund, the federal government with $12.7 million through the Affordable Housing Fund, and the Canada-British Columbia Bilateral Agreement with $975,000 in joint funding under the National Housing Strategy.
