The highly anticipated North End Court development project in Fernie has once again has experienced ‘significant’ delays with the new date for possible completion to be at the end of May 2023.
The prokect was expected to be finished by August of last year but was met with a seven-month delay. The project’s goal is to build an affordable housing complex that will include townhouses, but also have a larger range of rent prices for apartment units.
“The main factors have been COVID-19 and a shortage of tradespeople. Fernie as a whole has a shortage of houses so it’s made bringing in workers even more difficult,” said Gayle Vallance, president of the Fernie Family Housing Society.
Despite all of this, however, some progress has been made in terms of applications and making sure that units are being filled and applicants are hearing back, said Vallance.
“We now have enough applications to fill the 35-unit apartment block, which will have one, two and three-bedroom units. The apartment block has an elevator to accommodate those with disabilities. None of these units will be subsidized by BC Housing. Most will be low-end-market rents as determined by BC Housing.”
Making sure the project can be built is the main priority for the housing society, but also making sure the 14-row houses which are two and three-bedroom units which will be for low-income families are filled.
